How should you prepare for an upcoming hospital stay?

If you are admitted to a hospital, you will be asked about your insurance cover. As a student you are covered by your international health insurance. The policy covers treatment within compulsory health insurance without optional services. The easiest way for you is to present your “Ärzte-Info-Ticket” (medical info card) during the admission. Here you can print out your “Ärzte-Info-Ticket”: Ärzte-Info-Ticket (medical info card) (German). After your admission, the hospital will contact us and, under normal circumstances, we will then settle the billing directly with the hospital. Inpatient treatment without emergency situation! Should you inform your insurance provider in case you need to travel to a different country from the one you originally intended to?

You do not have to inform us if you choose to travel to a different country as long as the alternative country belongs to the same area of validity as the country you indicated. If the alternative country belongs to a different area of validity and if you stay there for more than 6 weeks, you need to inform us. What is the visa that you need to travel to Germany if you do not live in the EU?

If you’re not from one of the EU countries, then unfortunately you need to apply for a German Visa in order to be able to travel there. The good thing is, around 62 countries can enter Germany without a Visa, so we suggest you check if your country is on the list!

Will a stay in your home country be covered?

You want to interrupt your stay abroad for a few days in order to spend some time at home? No problem. If you interrupt your stay abroad and spend time at home, you will have insurance cover for 6 weeks. You can also travel home several times as long as the overall duration does not exceed 6 weeks. There will be insurance cover for costs resulting from an accident or from an acute and newly acquired illness. If you travel to your home country at the end of the insurance period, this is not considered to be an interruption of your stay abroad. In this case, insurance coverage ends as soon as you arrive in your home country.

Does it matter if the countries that you’re going to visit belong to different premium categories?

Please proceed as follows: Changing area of validity up to 6 weeks If your stay in a country which belongs to a different area of validity does not exceed 6 weeks, you do not have to do anything. You have worldwide insurance coverage up to 6 weeks. E.g.: You travel to Panama for 6 months. On your way back home, you want to make a four-week stopover in the USA.
